A mHealth Application as a Screening Tool for Neonatal Jaundice in Filipino Neonates

Governor Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital (GCGMH)

Participants: 59 newborns

  • Age: 1 – 14 days
  • Gestational age: ≥ 37 weeks
  • Birth weight ≥2500 g

Aim: to evaluate the performance of Picterus Jaundice Pro in newborns of a Filipino population.

Methods: observational cross-sectional study correlating methods of measuring bilirubin levels by:

  • Images (Picterus Jaundice Pro)
  • Transcutaneous Bilirubinometer (TcB) (Drager Jaundice meter JM-105)
  • Total Serum Bilirubin (TSB) measurements

Results: There were no significant differences between the average bilirubin levels measured by TSB, TcB and Picterus JP. No systematic overestimation or underestimation of bilirubin levels was observed. Picterus JP could accurately detect neonatal jaundice by estimating the bilirubin level. It is suitable as a screening tool to detect jaundice but not as a diagnostic test.
