Evaluation of Bilirubin Estimates in Newborns From Smartphone Digital Images in a Nepali Population

Dhulikhel hospital, Katmandu

Participants: 191 newborns

  • Age: 1 – 14 days
  • Gestational age: >34+6 weeks
  • Birth weight ≥ 1750 g

Aim: to evaluate the performance of Picterus Jaundice Pro in newborns of a Nepali population.

Methods: observational cross-sectional study evaluating correlation of bilirubin measuring methods:

  • Images (Picterus JP)
  • Transcutaneous Bilirubinometer (TcB) (Drager Jaundice meter JM-105)
  • Total serum bilirubin (TSB) measurements

Results: Picterus JP demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity, outperforming visual assessment. Measurements by Picterus JP showed a slight systematic underestimation of TSB values.

This project has received funding through an individual PhD grant from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Data are submitted for scientific publication.
