Evaluation of a Smartphone-based Screening Tool for Neonatal Jaundice in a Ugandan Population

Mengo Hospital, Kampala

Participants: 150 newborns

  • Age: 1 – 14 days
  • Gestational age: ≥ 37 weeks
  • Birth weight ≥2000 g
  • Newborns requiring a blood sample

Aim: to evaluate the performance of Picterus Jaundice Pro in newborns of a Ugandan population.
Methods: observational cross-sectional study correlating methods of measuring bilirubin levels by:

  • Images (Picterus Jaundice Pro)
  • Transcutaneous Bilirubinometer (TcB) (Drager Jaundice meter JM-105)
  • Total Serum Bilirubin (TSB) measurements

Results: Picterus Jaundice Pro is currently not approved for newborns with one or both parents of a skin colour scored by Fitzpatrick scale of 5 or higher (dark brown and very dark brown to black). The results of this study are used to improve our performance in all skin types. A new version of Picterus Jaundice Pro for all skin types will be released in 2024.

This project has received funding through the Norwegian University of Science and Picterus AS.
